Abul-Hafas Sharafuddin Al-Hamawi was nicknamed the ‘Sultan of Lovers’. He immigrated to a remote valley near Mecca from Egypt and dedicated his life to writing poetry. His intellectual prowess was influenced first by his father and later by his mentor Abil Hasan Al-Baqal. The poor came to see him for his kind-heartedness while princes sought him out for his beautiful words and deep intellect. Ibn al Farid declined offers of many important posts, choosing to live a life of isolation, to write his poems.
